Amway is a company which manufacturers, markets and distributes a large range of high quality products, similar to those you'd find in a retail department store. But while most manufacturers distribute their products by selling to wholesalers - who increase the price and sell to retailers, who add their own margins before selling to the public - we do things differently. Instead of going through third parties, we give individuals the opportunity to distribute products direct to the public and earn the money usually charged by 'middle people'.

When was Amway founded?

Amway Corporation was founded in November 1959, in Michigan, USA by Jay Van Andel and Richard DeVos. Amway of Australia became the first affiliate in 1971.

Why was the company started?

Before founding Amway, Van Andel and DeVos spent nearly 10 years building a successful distributorship for Nutrilite, a California-based company which made vitamins and food supplements. While they were impressed with Nutrilite's products, Van Andel and DeVos realised that the real breakthrough was the company's unique distribution system. They also saw the staggering potential if they linked it to a wide range of everyday, high quality products. To do this, they needed to form a company of their own - and Amway was born. The predictions of Van Andel and De Vos were proven right when, just 13 years later, their company had grown so successful they were able to purchase the Nutrilite business outright and make NUTRILITE* products part of the ever-expanding range offered by Amway.

How did our founders begin?

DeVos and Van Andel began by working from their own homes. One year later they opened their first warehouse, and today their 'little basement business' operates in over 80 countries and territories worldwide.

How stable is Amway?

It would be hard to find a more secure company. In 1999-2000, global sales exceeded US$5 billion. In the same year, Australian sales were approximately A$150 million - which makes us the nation's largest direct selling organisation. Few companies have experienced such an extended period of growth over the last four decades, and we have done it debt-free. Clearly, we are here for the long haul.

What are the company's goals?

We aim to be among the most successful and admired direct sales companies in the Australasian region. Worldwide Amway plans to expand into every country that offers conditions favourable for private enterprise. But more than that, we aim to give every individual who wants it, a chance to cut loose from the restrictions of working for someone else, build a business of their own and perhaps even achieve their dreams.

How do we compare to other companies?

Amway of Australia Logo Amway ranks in the top 500 companies and is the largest direct selling organisation in Australia. The Australian premises occupy 25,000 square metres of warehouse and offices in the Sydney suburb of Castle Hill. With success like this comes responsibility, so it is not surprising that we are active in improving standards of conduct and opportunity for the entire industry.
  • Amway of Australia's annual turnover contributes more to the country's economy and the wellbeing of Australians than other "All-Australian" Direct Selling businesses.
  • We pride ourselves on being a good corporate citizen. The company has made a particular commitment to the Children's Cancer Institute of Australia (CCIA) to act as it's principal sponsor. This has resulted in the raising of more than $1.7 million. Sponsorship programs are selected that make a lasting and significant difference to the lives of people. Including those which help young people, those less fortunate and recognise the importance of human endeavour through sports, fitness and adventure. Community support initiatives have been the cornerstone of many sponsorships thus far.
  • Amway is a world leader when it comes to the high concentration levels of many of its products. Concentrated products contribute towards reducing land fill waste. They also provide economical, value-for-money commodities to the many Australians who purchase them.
Information Technology at Amway of Australia

Here in Australia, Amway sets the pace in leading edge technology solutions. We were one of the first companies to launch real-time online ordering systems to consumers in this market in March 1998. Our second generation e-commerce platform, www.a2k.com.au, which was launched in April 2000, has been so successful that up to 50% of all orders are now taken through it. Proud of its contributions to the achievement, our IT partner, IBM, uses Amway's move into web based transactions as a case study for its e-business clients. Recent developments in IT at Amway include Business Intelligence and Data Warehousing. Amway of Australia continues to push the boundaries in IT solutions to support its direct fulfillment operations both in Australia and New Zealand.
