DFS was founded in Hong Kong in 1961 as a liquor, tobacco, cosmetics and fragrances duty-free concession at the airport. From here the company concentrated on the Asia/Pacific region as the fastest growing area for international travel. Its customers were primarily Japanese.

In the past decade, DFS has greatly expanded it area of operation and target customers. We now operate more than 150 stores in 16 countries throughout Asia and the Pacific Basin, including the West Coast of North America. Our primary store formats include DFS Galleria anchor stores, duty-free and general merchandise concessions, boutiques in leading hotels and resorts, and specialty stores. These stores are located downtown in major cities near hotels and restaurants and in major international airports.

DFS Group Limited is based in San Francisco, California, and is the world's leading retailer for international travellers. It employs approximately 9,000 employees worldwide. Its majority owner is the French luxury goods company LVMH Moet Hennessy Louis Vuitton owning 61%. Co-founder Robert Miller owns the remaining 39%.

DFS retails top quality merchandise in the areas of liquor, perfume, cosmetics, leather goods, ready to wear products, watches, pens, lighters, opals, souvenirs and much more.

The company currently operates 4 stores in Australia with an annual turnover in the region of AUD$150 million. In addition, the Australian head office in Sydney is responsible for the groups' operation in New Zealand. Annual turnover in NZ is NZ$100 million, giving a combined region turnover of AUD$240 million.

At present, we have stores located in The Rocks, Sydney, Cairns, and Surfers Paradise as well as locations in Auckland, Christchurch.
