A number of healthcare charities employ nurses, for instance Uniting Care and Wesley Mission which run aged care homes. These charities don’t seek to make a profit, but some facilities charge patients similar rates to other private hospitals to cover their costs. Other facilities get some funding from the government and don’t charge their patients a fee.

Some general practice clinics employ nurses to support doctors and perform immunisations, dressings, patient education and blood tests. Some nurses combine their qualification with naturopathy or acupuncture and run their own private practices.

Nurses can also be found working in schools, working for pharmaceutical companies marketing medicine and equipment, running health education classes, in advisory roles, doing health administration jobs, fronting specialist exercise classes, and many other roles.

Drug liaison nurses operate under a policy of 'harm minimisation'. They see drug use as a health problem, not a social or political problem. These nurses try to ensure that drug users use drugs safely, and have access to treatment if they need it. Drug liaison is not a specialty for political crusaders – it’s about the reality of trying to help drug users, not blame them.
