The private health system is for people who are prepared to pay for their healthcare, either out of their own pocket or with private health insurance.
People often choose private health facilities because they can have a more comfortable room to themselves, choose their doctor and other practitioners, and have surgery or procedures without having to wait. Aside from these perks, the private health system has a comparable level of care to the public system.
Private hospitals
Some private hospitals are run by large companies which seek to make a profit. The biggest private hospital providers in Australia include Ramsay Health Care and Healthscope.
Private aged care facilities
Aged care facilities look after elderly people who are too sick or incapacitated to look after themselves, including people with dementia. Most of these facilities are run by private companies outside the public health system, such as Moran Health Care and Ramsay Health Care.
