The public health system

Australia has a good public health system which often attracts the best and brightest nurses. Most procedures in public hospitals are covered by Medicare, which means the government covers the cost and the patient doesn’t have to pay.

Public health is managed by each state and territory government. For example, NSW Health is the department that manages public health in NSW. Nurses generally don’t have much interaction with their health department or area health service, and will just deal with the local administration at their hospital. When you apply for a nursing position, you'll apply directly to the facility you are interested in, not the company or organisation that runs it.

Other public health services

Nurses don’t just work in hospitals. There are many other public health facilities, including:

  • community health centres
  • specialist disease clinics
  • clinics for homeless people
  • public nursing homes
  • air ambulance
  • midwifery clinics

These facilities often employ only a handful of specialist nurses, but are an integral part of the public health system.
