Current size of the profession


Nursing is one of the nation's largest professions. In 2003, there were 236,645 nurses employed in Australia. Of these, 189,071 were registered nurses and 47,574 were enrolled nurses. Of all employed nurses, 20,434 (8.6%) were males and 216,210 (91.4%) were females. 

Most nurses are employed in public hospitals, clinics and facilities, with the remainder employed privately. The majority of nurses work in NSW, where there is a total of 115,826 nurses. This is broken into: 80,560 registered nurses, 16,393 enrolled nurses, 18,830 midwives and 43 nurse practitioners.
