Nursing vs midwifery

Are nursing and midwifery separate professions? The NSW Midwives’ Association argues that midwifery is a separate profession that is unique from nursing. The Association says that the difference lies in the fact that nursing involves caring for sick people, while midwifery involves caring for healthy pregnant women.

Even so, midwifery is generally still thought of as a specialty area of nursing. No doubt midwives will continue to challenge this view and lobby for recognition as a separate profession. Whether midwifery will totally branch off from nursing is yet to be seen, although the two professions will always have a lot in common.
