One of the great perks of the nursing profession is the ability for you to work pretty much anywhere in the world. Common destinations are the UK, USA, Canada, Saudi Arabia, United Arab Emirates and New Zealand. If you intend to work in a foreign hospital system, you’ll need to fluently speak the same language as the locals or work in an English-speaking facility.
There are two main options to get a job overseas:
- applying through an international recruitment agency from Australia
- travel to the country of choice and apply for jobs once you’re there (don't forget you’ll need to have a working visa).
It’s worth doing a bit of research on the health system of your destination before you go. Talk to colleagues or check online so you know what conditions to anticipate and what wages to expect.

Recruitment agencies
A number of agencies actively recruit nurses to work overseas. Most agencies don’t charge a fee and some will even pay for your airfare and expenses. The agencies usually make money by either receiving a fee from the hospital once they place you, or taking a small percentage of your pay.
You can either approach an Australian-based agency that does overseas placements or contact an overseas agency who might sponsor you to go to the country. Different agencies specialise in different countries. Most agencies have websites and advertise in nursing publications.
