General nursing streams

There are three main career paths in registered nursing – clinical, management and education. The clinical stream is the traditional aspect of nursing – working with patients.

For a long time nurses could not progress their careers by working in the clinical area – they would have to go into management.

But these days, nurses who specialise in a particular field can move into roles like clinical nurse consultant or nurse practitioner. These are not only highly regarded professional roles, but offer greater responsibility, autonomy and good pay.

Another stream of nursing is management. Positions such as director of nursing and nurse unit manager mean that you not only have to support your staff on the wards, but manage a budget, the needs of your staff and the nursing needs of the patients on the ward.

Other positions in this stream are health service manager or project officer, where a nurse is appointed to project-manage a particular program.

Finally, you can progress to nurse education in a clinical setting – as a clinical nurse educator or a nurse educator – or enter academia and lecture at TAFE or universities.
