To become a registered nurse you must complete a Bachelor of Nursing at university. The degree takes 3 years full time. Nursing degrees can be combined with a range of other degrees at some universities, including law, arts and other health sciences.
Midwives typically complete a nursing degree before doing a postgraduate course in midwifery, but a Bachelor of Midwifery at UTS now allows potential midwives to qualify directly from university. Enrolled nurses must have a qualification from TAFE, which takes one year to complete. Hospital-based training may provide you with opportunities for continued learning.

| You can often work as a nurse while you study. If at TAFE, you’ll get paid for your clinical experience as a trainee enrolled nurse. If at uni, many courses allow you to qualify as an assistant nurse after first year, which means you can get a paid job. |
