Job ad growth surpasses pre-COVID levels in some states

The latest SEEK employment data shows that in the fortnight ended 23 August 2020, job ad volumes across Australia were 71% of pre-COVID levels (February 2020). For the first time since restrictions were initially imposed, some states have surpassed pre-COVID levels. The Northern Territory and Tasmania have both exceeded pre-COVID levels meaning there are now more jobs on SEEK in these states than there were before COVID hit in February. Meanwhile, job ads in Western Australia and South Australia are very close to reaching pre-COVID levels with 99% and 96% respectively.

Hospitality & Tourism on the rise

Strong growth for the Hospitality & Tourism industry in NSW (+29%), VIC (+29%), WA (+29%), QLD (+25%), TAS (+18%), SA (+37%), and the NT (+14%) has seen this industry appear as the leading in-demand industry across Australia, growing by 33% in the fortnight ending 6 September, which follows the previous two weeks growth of 76%.

Victoria sees the ongoing effect of restrictions

Victoria continues to be impacted by the stage 4 restrictions, with the number of job ads in the state at 45% of pre-COVID levels (February 2020), although in pleasing news, this is still 59% higher than the low point of job ad volumes in April.
