What's it like to be a Food Technologist?
Food Technologists (also known as Food Scientists) develop new food products, improve existing ones and help to establish standards for how food should be produced, packaged and marketed. Food Technologists work in a variety of fields, such as meat, seafood, dairy, confectionary, snack foods and beverages.
Tasks and duties
- Undertaking research and conducting experiments into different aspects of food production including taste, colour, flavour, texture, nutritional content, storage, packaging, deterioration and quality.
- Providing advice on preserving, processing and storing foods in addition to developing quality control and safety procedures and standards.
- Ensuring compliance with relevant legislation and regulations.
Many Food Technologists use research skills and scientific methods to help improve the taste, shelf life or nutritional value of food products. They may work in different food or beverage companies and government organisations in laboratories, offices or factories. This role is suited to scientific individuals with excellent problem-solving skills and high attention to detail.
How to become a Food Technologist
Food Technologists usually have studied nutrition, food science or dietetics at university. These courses generally require the successful completion of Year 12 and prerequisite subjects such as mathematics, biological and chemistry.
- Undertake a relevant qualification in nutrition, food science, dietetics, food and nutrition or a related science-based field.
- Some Food Technologists may be required to provide a First Aid Certificate, undergo a National Police Check and medical exam.
- Food technology is a broad field, however there are many career pathways such as completing a Masters in Food Science and Technology or specialising in product design, food fermentation, food biotechnology or food entrepreneurship.
