Art Therapists plan and conduct art therapy sessions or programs to improve clients’ emotional, physical and cognitive well-being.

Tasks and duties

  • Establishing goals and objectives for arts therapy sessions in consultation with client or client groups.
  • Designing arts therapy sessions to meet a client’s goals or objectives.
  • Instructing individuals or groups in the use of arts media, such as paint, clay or yarn.
  • Providing guided self-expression through art to help clients recover from or cope with cognitive or emotional difficulties.
  • Acknowledging client progress and reflecting upon their reactions to the artistic process.
  • Designing individual treatment plans that incorporate arts therapy, counselling and psychotherapy techniques.
  • Writing progress reports related to individual clients or client groups.

How to become an Art Therapist

SEEK Learning
In order to practice in Australia, Arts Therapists must be registered with the Australian, New Zealand and Asian Creative Arts Therapies Association (ANZACATA). Pathways to registration typically require a combined 6 years of education and training.
  1. Complete a bachelor degree in art, counselling, psychology, nursing, social science or a related field at university.
  2. Complete a postgraduate qualification in arts therapy. The postgraduate course must be recognised by ANZACATA.
  3. Complete 750 hours of supervised field experience on a clinical placement.
  4. Register with ANZACATA.
