What's it like to be an Engineering Surveyor?

Engineering Surveyors generally work on civil engineering projects to review plans and identify potential design or structural issues. They use a variety of instruments and software such as Total Station, GPS, Dumpy Level, Digital Level and CAD.

Tasks and duties

  • Liaising with clients on site to ensure works are carried out as expected.
  • Performing surveys, fieldwork, calculations, data reduction and manipulation.
  • Preparing models for setout and machine guidance.
  • Completing as-constructed reports and plans.
  • Managing survey equipment and software.
Engineering Surveyors may work both onsite and off-site, and usually work as part of an engineering team.

How to become an Engineering Surveyor

SEEK Learning
To become a Surveyor you usually have to complete a diploma or degree in surveying. A Construction White Card may also be required to work onsite.
  1. Complete a qualification in surveying, such as a Bachelor of Surveying or a Bachelor of Spatial Science Technology (Surveying).
  2. Consider developing advanced spatial engineering skills through postgraduate study, such as a Master of Engineering (Spatial). Postgraduate study may be internationally recognised and allow you to register as a Licensed Surveyor.
