What's it like to be a Labourer?

Labourers carry out manual tasks in a variety of settings, but commonly on construction sites. The manual tasks are generally non-complex and able to be performed with some basic, on-the-job training. Labourers are not required to have a trade profession, some labourers are particularly skilled in a certain area, such as bricklaying or scaffolding.

Tasks and duties

  • Carrying out manual tasks as directed in a safe manner.
  • Unloading equipment and materials.
  • Operating machinery, use tools, or conducting warehouse operations.
  • Developing specialist skills, which may involve additional training.
  • Understanding and following safe work practices.
  • Keeping the worksite clean.
Labourers may be required to use tools or operate machinery. They are also required to complete given tasks in a safe and efficient manner.

How to become a Labourer

SEEK Learning
Formal qualifications are not required to work as a Labourer. However, to work in the construction industry you need to hold a White Card (CPCCCWHS1001 - Prepare to work safety in the construction industry).
  1. Choose an industry to work in. In addition to construction, Labourers may also work in areas such as manufacturing, landscaping and demolition.
  2. Complete training with a registered organisation to obtain a White Card. The White Card certification will remain valid unless you do not work in construction for a period of two years or more.
  3. Find out if there are any additional clothing, equipment, safety or certification requirements.
  4. Consider taking part in on-the-job training or completing a TAFE course to build on the knowledge you’ve acquired on the job.
