What's it like to be a Rehabilitation Counsellor?

A Rehabilitation Counsellor is an allied health professional who supports people with disabilities, medical or health conditions or who are socially disadvantaged to reach their individual goals (e.g. returning to paid employment, living independently or attending an educational program).

Tasks and duties

  • Provide counselling and case management to help disadvantaged people reach their individual rehabilitation goals.
  • Assess and work with clients in relation to their career, study or employment options by providing information and resources in these areas.
  • Assist the client, their family members and any professionals involved with the client with developing rehabilitation plans.
It is common for Rehabilitation Counsellors to work with either state or federally funded vocational rehabilitation providers, however some Rehabilitation Counsellors also work with private workplace rehabilitation providers.
Some Rehabilitation Counsellors specialise in working with individuals who have particular conditions or disabilities, such as those with complex drug and alcohol abuse histories, refugees or people with mental health conditions.

How to become a Rehabilitation Counsellor

Rehabilitation Counsellors usually have bachelor’s degree-level qualifications in allied health or health science, and many have a postgraduate qualification in rehabilitation counselling.
  1. Complete an undergraduate degree in the field. This may be a Bachelor of Disability and Developmental Education (Rehabilitation Counselling), or a degree in social work, health science or allied health.
  2. Then undertake a postgraduate qualification specialising in rehabilitation studies, such as a Graduate Diploma in Rehabilitation Studies or a Master of Health Sciences (Rehabilitation Counselling). Clinical placements are often undertaken in workers compensation and rehabilitation settings.
  3. To specialise or further your studies, complete a postgraduate degree such as a Graduate Diploma or Masters. These degrees will set you up with the required knowledge to help a wide variety of clients.
