What's it like to be a Systems Analyst?

As a Systems Analyst you will be responsible for maintaining and improving computer systems for an organisation and its clients. You will evaluate processes used in existing IT systems, and propose modifications, additional system components or new systems to meet user requirements.

Tasks and duties

  • Collaborating with users, Business Analysts, Project Leads and IT team to resolve issues and ensure solutions are viable and consistent.
  • Analysing business processes, procedures and work practices to identify inefficiencies and recommend improvements.
  • Maintaining and upgrading existing systems as required.
  • Designing new computer systems and frameworks.
  • Creating user and training documentation, and conducting formal training.
  • Developing functional specifications for use by System Developers.
Many Systems Analysts are also Programmers and are therefore also responsible for creating the code for software applications.
Systems Analysts are often required to work outside standard hours to oversee upgrades or fixes to ensure minimal disruption to normal business activities.

The most common salary  for a Systems Analyst is between $100k and $120k

How to become a Systems Analyst

SEEK Learning
Although many Systems Analysts are self-taught or have learned their programming skills on the job, most organisations will require you to have some formal qualification.
  1. Complete a Certificate IV in Systems Analysis and Design (ICT40715), Diploma of Systems Analysis and Design (ICT50815) or a Bachelor degree in IT, computer science or business administration.
  2. Gain experience working with computer systems.
