Boilermaker Apprentice
I’m an apprentice boilermaker and I’ve been experiencing workplace harassment from my boss. It’s to the point where I have trouble getting out of bed in the morning knowing I’m going to be picked on for nothing. If it was constructive criticism I’d take it on the chin but it “I’ll find something to team him for”. I got a written warning today for have a riggers glove and a welding glove on. I want to leave the industry now, what do you people suggest?

Courage. Find what it is that you need to ask a colleague or a friend at work - if there is someone, what is going on. Ask them "why do they think I am being picked on?" and listen, Ask another, if you can, and get a perspective. If the perpetrator is a manger then it will be difficult but if a supervisor not so much. Stand your ground and tell them to stop but be informed of what recourse there is. Don't leave the trade, find a better employer - Subs are on their way and your trade is valuable

Starting out and having a bad boss can be very tough. Don't give them anything to complain about. Speak to you're apprentice training provider they should be able to help

Really sorry you’re going through this. Apprentices need a supportive environment, and it sounds like you’re not getting that. Some workplaces can be tough, but that’s not the same as tearing down your confidence. It might help to chat with Employment New Zealand, they can outline your rights and suggest support options: https://www.employment.govt.nz/resolving-problems/bullying-harassment-and-discrimination/bullying-at-work
