Manager

Dec 2021

Manager

Queensland, Australia
3 to 4 years in the role,

It is a good place to work for, but definitely has its challenges.

The good things

The staff, and customers you forge relationships with. Lots of laughs and you will be fed with all sorts of bbq goodness. Fun place to work as far as product and customers go, always something new to play with. Incentives are good, but are affected by current world crisis in getting goods, which doesn't seem to be a high priority in changing. The company is moving forward with the times.

The challenges

From store management level up, there really isn't a work/life balance, you will have to do things on your days off.* Old systems in place like computers, stocktake procedures, generally old buildings and hardware etc, that they will only spend money on when they break down ..... and of course it breaks down during busy periods. Little to no training when new systems/programs put in place, figure it out for yourself.* Constant and ever tightening budgets leave store teams working themselves to the bone to keep up.* Head office have no clue as to what happens in stores, and the decisions made and passed down the line make that obvious.* To a degree, there is some micromanaging. Survey programme that should be anonymous, is definitely not anonymous.* * when you raise all these points, you will be met with classic template responses like 'the big picture', 'figure it out' and 'make it happen'

Enjoyable working with mates but upper management are clueless.

The good things

Thoroughly liked my manager in store and my assistant manager. The culture in the store was fun and everyone was easy to get along with. Also getting to cook a different meal each weekend on one of the bbqs is quite a fun experience.

The challenges

Honestly there was only one challenge and that was dealing with higher level management ( above store level), every week it seemed an item went on discount or sale, which is hard to keep track of when it changes every week. Secondly when these offers were initiated there was usually limited items in stock already(which they can check), leading to customers turning up at the store and getting angry because we don’t have enough stock to satisfy demand and it’ll be a month before we’d have the item in again...
