Job Applicant Senior Level
Apr 2024
Sydney NSW 2000
3 to 4 years in the role

I have applied for 2 senior roles at UNSW, each position requiring some time to prepare. "Talent Aquisition" do not pick up the phone, return calls or update the application portal. Very disrespectful to those people who make bespoke responses to position availability.

The good things
Nothing good. Don't bother applying for positions.
The challenges
No response from Talent Acquisition or the individuals managers. Your application simply lands in a void with no response or feedback. Do not waste your time on applications.

Collaborative environment but heavy workload

The good things
Lots of opportunities for collaboration and networking
The challenges
Micromanagement, workload more than exceeds 35 work week and management unwillingness to do anything about it, unwilling to be innovative, very set in old ways and unwilling to embrace technology

Senior Manager

Kensington NSW 2033

I will never recommend anyone work here.

The good things
Some great team members and stakeholders within the faculties and divisions.
The challenges
Full time staff and fixed term staff were treated better than contractors and consultants. Upper management and project staff were unwilling to change and performanced out competent knowledgeable staff. Was a very toxic environment in certain divisions and overall a very bad culture.

Culture is set at the top - new broom(s) required

The good things
Some key people trying real hard to make a difference.
The challenges
Those good people are heavily outnumbered by the policies & current toxic culture

Great flexibility and salary. Really enjoyed the culture

The good things
Salary and super is amazing, i feel they really value staff. Flex work is great too. When in the office team members really try to collaborate with you
The challenges
Flex work is great however, some staff are too 'flexible'. Management need to compel staff to come in and build stronger face to face relationships with their team and stakholders. Learning and development was limited and outdated policies cause a lot of confusion and delays. Communication isnt the clearest, i never really had clear direction on dealines. Lack of communication from team members 'flex' working too

Ultimately a positive experience

The good things
Innovation was encouraged but workload and pressures often meant those ideas went nowhere
The challenges
Diversity is a good thing but I had times i questioned english language ability of some staff

Accountant

Bad leadership hiring people which tends to justify their existence, structure is hierarchical with heaps of layers of middle management. Bad overall envirornment.

The good things
The uni pays well compared to the market.
The challenges
Handcuffed by policies, with manual internal controls, requiring people to do work in specific ways with little to no explanation, or even one was provided, was inadequate.

Eye-opening experience but ultimately toxic

The good things
Salary and yearly progressions 17% super. Good, smart people as colleagues. Nice campus.
The challenges
Constant very high workload and unrecognised overtime, with flex not able to be taken. Most stressed I've ever been, and in the end it wasn't worth it. Local management combined with overall push to maximise profit and rankings at the expense of workers and students can make it a toxic workplace. Many staff quit around the same time.

Innovation Community Ambassador

Best place to work with inspiring and highly talented people.

The good things
The team, and the energetic working environment. Everyone there were passionate about solving problems using innovative solutions.
The challenges
Location. Getting there is a challenge as there is no train station nearby. And parking there is quite expensive.

Has the potential for being a great place to work - their 2025 Strategy sounded promising when I started two years ago - but they've lost sight of their goals.

The good things
Proximity to home is the most positive thing going for it. And the majority of the people are lovely and worth staying for.
The challenges
Constantly changing goal posts - inconsistent priorities; poor stability; poor change management practices. Frustrating and stressful. Top layer management is fickle and doesn't appear to listen/hear effectively.
