Manager

Oct 2020

Manager

Victoria, Australia
5 to 6 years in the role, former employee

Pockets of trying to work for the betterment of students despite an absence of leadership. Anyone talented leaves or is deemed as difficult and forced out.

The good things

Nice campus, lots of trees and animals.

The challenges

Senior Management is extremely poor. Executive Level mediocrity and groupthink leads to mediocrity being accepted as the norm. A university with huge potential but it won't happen with the current rusted on VC and VP Team.

A toxic place to work.

The good things

Students are amazing to work with. The campus is active & engaging

The challenges

Incompetent management & SEG. Bunch of academics with 0 management skills running a university. No career progression as Management is partial to staff they worked with in other Universities (Griffith in particular). Current management has no idea about the history of University & how University was built over the years.

La Trobe provides a stimulating and supportive workplace

The good things

La Trobe is a great place to work. As a smaller university there's lots of opportunities to take on roles for career development. I feel really great about working at a university which has a strong commitment to social justice and to continual learning. La Trobe contributes expertise to important social debates. I also love working with so many talented academics and professional staff who are committed to providing an excellent education for students.

The challenges

Federal government support for universities is desperately inadequate. This has left La Trobe vulnerable to the financial effects of the loss of international students this year.

The challenges

Ignore bad behaviour and allow the worst people to run things. Spout culture but it’s the worst I’ve experienced. Management are just there to cover each other’s backs. Third rate university

The challenges

Older management seem totally out of touch with the target demographic (students) and even more out of touch with (any) industry outside University. Lazy mid level staff, very low accountability, days of work takes weeks or somehow even months. Simply too many middle and senior managers who produce too little if any work product. Generally low level of employee competence, surprising with so many degrees floating around. Students are taught far better standards than those practiced at the University. I have seen EDMs being designed in Microsoft Word, tragic.
