UC is distinctive by design, in its processes and performance.

The good things

I am a UC Alumni and had joined in as a staff member in 2018. UC is an organisation filled with opportunities and its belief in its people is high commendable. Its current processes truly reflect that it is Distinctive by Design. If you are interested in working in the Higher Education Sector and a company that is for the people, UC is the place to BE.

The challenges

UC is a young university and the opportunities can be limited at the moment if you are interested in specific areas to work or study. However, it does have the potential to create opportunities in the coming years. Its what I would proudly call, WATCH THIS SPACE !

Toxic management culture with illusions of grandeur

The good things

The challenges

Hiring degree certified managers with limited experience was like giving the keys to the family Mercedes to teenagers - and with no experienced oversight or understanding of the job, everyone kept patting themselves on the back while producing mediocre results. With any challenges quickly managed out.

All the good people are leaving, and I want to go too.

The good things

Some great people doing good work. Some wonderful, intelligent and genuine colleagues over the years, and a good environment to walk around. The current (but outgoing) VC has good values.

The challenges

Feeling isolated and unsupported, not having my perspective listened to, repeated exclusion by people who see themselves as insiders of the hierarchy, having unsubstantiated assumptions made about me because I don't fit in to the norm.

UC is being mismanaged into the ground by those at the top

The good things

Some wonderful colleagues trying their best in an atmosphere of the lowest possible morale. Search for articles in the Canberra Times and you’ll see how unhappy everyone is. Another good thing, the DVCA has just resigned.

The challenges

Terrible leadership at the top. Mental decisions being made. Who thought it was smart to put the excellent University Research Institutes into the less-than-excellent Faculties. All the best researchers are leaving or have already left. The great rankings currently coming out will now quickly plummet. Certain people have a lot to answer for. Dishonesty and sociopathy rules!

Always busy and presented regular new challenges but changes in hierarchy changed focus to management controls rather than service to stakeholders.

The good things

Used to be a supportive campus lunchtime activities supported personal growth particularly in creative endeavours. Friendly staff.

The challenges

After starting in a supportive work environment, it quickly went downhill with the change of Vice Chancellor. There has been another change of VC but I have met people I knew when working there and the situation has not improved.
