SEEK Employment Report

Launched in July 2005, the SEEK Employment Index (SEI) is the leading Australian indicator to measure labour market supply and correlate this against labour market demand.

The SEEK Employment Index (SEI) aims to provide candidates, recruiters, employers, economists, the media and government with a detailed understanding of labour cycles and emerging trends within the employment industry. Produced in partnership with NAB it has been created to provide rich labour market data, addressing:

  • Jobseeker supply (to aid in the identification of skills shortages)
  • Industry and regional employment growth

The historical data contains three key employment indicators for Australia since October 2001:

  • SEEK Employment Index (SEI) - a key indicator of the balance between the demand and supply for jobs in Australia (ie. the ratio of new job advertisements posted on SEEK for which SEEK accepts applications).
  • New Job Ads Index (original).
  • New Job Ads Index (seasonally adjusted).

Estimates are available at both the state and national level.

Methodology: Each month, job ad and application data is analysed using methods devised by SEEK and NAB.

Please note: The data in the monthly reports can differ from those in the data tables since the latter are updated data with the actual series of job applications (APPS). The SEI data in the monthly reports include a component of APPS that is projected but the tables onsite are updated around the middle of the month with the realised APPS.
