We develop internationally aligned Australian Standards® that deliver a net benefit to Australia. The work of Standards Australia enhances the nation's economic efficiency, international competitiveness and contributes to community demand for a safe and sustainable environment.

We are currently going through an exciting digital transformation which is revolutionising the way we develop and publish Australian Standards. This includes adopting and building new publishing technologies, enriching our data and advancing the collaboration between industry experts, Standards Australia and our stakeholders nationally and internationally. We are driving towards a future where we are working simpler, faster, better!

We are looking for an experienced Editor to work in our team of publishing specialists developing Australian Standards, Technical Reports and other documents that are authored by our expert committee members.

About the role

You will be working in a small publishing team. The team works in Word and XML-based programs. You will be collaborating with Project Managers across the business who provide the main point of contact with the drafting committees. All Editors play a vital role in helping us evolve the ways we publish to deliver better and more varied resources for our stakeholders.

Editors are not expected to be technical experts in the fields of our publications, however, they need to be able to work across varied complex technical subject areas.

An Editor at Standards Australia reviews documents from two perspectives:

  1. Traditional editing: assessing and correcting structure, grammar, punctuation, correct expression, Plain English and ensuring accurate references & cross references; and
  2. Standards-specific drafting: ensuring documents conform to Standards Australia’s guides and House Style and the national and international conventions of standardisation. We will provide in-house training for this specialised knowledge.

Key Responsibilities:

  • To ensure that the structure, content, style of documents is in accordance with Standards Australia's Guides and rules.
  • To edit documents appropriately at the various stages of Standards development.
  • To meet scheduled deadlines and communicate regarding progress of tasks.
  • To liaise with colleagues, such as Project Managers and Publishing Assistants, to ensure edits are understood and implemented as intended.
  • To communicate effectively and professionally with technical committee members in meetings and via documents.
  • To support the development of publications to best international standardisation practices.

Professional Qualifications and Experience Required

  • University degree, or other relevant qualification, in an appropriate field.
  • Minimum 3 years’ experience in editing technical materials or technical writing.
  • Excellent English language skills.
  • Good interpersonal skills and effective time management skills.
  • Advanced attention to detail.
  • Experience working in a publishing house will be a strong advantage as would familiarity with electronic publishing.
  • Familiarity with eXtyles or Typefi and XML or HTML is desired (we will offer training in these publishing tools).
  • Any technical background in engineering, technical or physical infrastructure is desired.

Working for Standards Australia

Integrity, Courage, Accountability, Respect and Excellence form the basis of all we do. We measure our success not only on the outcomes but on the path we took to get there.

We offer a flexible and positive environment where individual and team efforts are recognised and rewarded. We invest in the health and welfare of our people offering access to an Employee Assistance Program, Salary Packaging, yearly flu vaccinations and regular social events.  We are committed to a workplace which supports equal employment opportunities.

What now?

Please apply with your resume and cover letter that details your editorial experience. Eligible applicants must be a Permanent Resident or have legal rights to work in Australia.
