Corporate Accountant

The Gladstone Area Water Board (GAWB) is a Commercial Statutory Authority responsible to the Minister for Natural Resources, Mines and Energy and the bulk water provider located in the exciting port city of Gladstone, Central Queensland. GAWB supplies raw and potable water to major resource-sector industries, power generating organisations, and the Regional Council.

As part of our Finance team you will support the Financial Controller in providing finance, asset and management accounting support and reporting for GAWB. This role is responsible for ensuring compliance with accounting standards, audit and tax requirements and also provides back up support to other roles / areas of the business as required and in accordance with Gladstone Area Water Board's strategic business objectives.

Key competencies of the role include but are not limited to:

  • Completion of all necessary accounting tasks for month end closure of the general and sub ledgers, including journals, reconciliations and analytical review.
  • Maintain and administer the asset register.
  • Complete taxation related accounting entries.
  • Responsible for cash management reporting, forecasting and cash requests.
  • Assist with analysis of data to identify efficiencies, cost controls and improved business practices.
  • Financial operations including, expenditure approvals, supplier payment arrangements, payroll processing and ledger maintenance.
  • Regularly measure, analyse and report on departmental business performance to relevant Management teams.
  • Review / audit monthly Profit and Loss, Balance Sheet and Cash Flow Statements and reconciliations.
  • Undertake variance analysis on actual to budget/forecast comparatives
  • Preparation and lodgement of key tax compliance documents including monthly GST/BAS statements, annual income tax and FBT returns.
  • Assist in preparing financial statements and annual statutory accounts in accordance with relevant accounting standards, policies, procedures, and audit requirements.
  • Prepare monthly management accounts and reports ensuring compliance with accounting standards.
  • Complete the preparation, implementation, reporting and monitoring of budget/forecasts and other projections as required.

The successful applicant will possess the following qualifications/experience:

  • Tertiary qualifications in Business, Commerce or equivalent from a recognised institution, or extensive relevant experience;
  • Eligibility for membership of a recognised accounting body in Australia, e.g. CA, CPA or studying towards completion
  • 3 to 5 years accounting experience in financial reporting and management;
  • Advanced proficiency on MS Office suite of products including accounting applications;
  • Strong commercial and financial acumen with expertise in analysis, budgeting and reporting with a solid understanding of the financial/accounting practices and procedures and requirements;
  • Strong analytical skills, high attention to detail and accuracy.
  • Communication and relationship management skills
  • Strong organisational and time management skills, ability to meet deadlines
  • High degree of initiative and performance orientation;
  • Reliable and responsible with high ethical standards;
  • Ability to work as part of a team and hold a departmental philosophy of customer service;
  • Current valid "C" class driver's license.
