Child and Family Psychologist

Bulgarr Ngaru Medical Aboriginal Corporation (BNMAC) is a not for profit Aboriginal Community Controlled Organisation which provides primary health care services to Aboriginal people.

The role: This position is responsible for providing a range of community-based child and family counselling services across both mainstream Primary Care and Aboriginal community-controlled settings in accordance with evidence-based practice.  To work collaboratively within a multi-disciplinary framework (established and supported by the Casino Child Psychology and Therapeutic Support Service Project Consortium involving BNMAC, Casino General Practice; working with NNSWLHD project partners), ensuring a focus on health promotion, early identification and intervention.

  • Provide a comprehensive counselling service for both Aboriginal and Non-Aboriginal children, their families and carers, including diagnostic assessment, treatment programs, therapy for children and families where necessary, written reports, liaison with other health professionals and consultation
  • Assess the child’s functional capacity using the Children’s Global Assessment Scale (CGAS) at commencement and at the end of treatment
  • Provide services in accordance with the model of care and referral pathway for the Casino Child Psychology and Therapeutic Support Service.
  • Use a range of service delivery models in a variety of settings as appropriate to the child’s and family’s needs, including individual, small group, family and the development of educational resources and tools
  • Participate in the Paediatric Coordination Team meetings, Agency coordination and Case Management meetings as appropriate
  • Develop and maintain close links with other agencies
  • Participate in regular (weekly) case review with the NNSWLHD Casino Child and Family Psychologist
  • Identify opportunities for improvement in clinical practice participate in ongoing quality improvement activities
  • Provide health education/health promotion and preventative services in the field of child and family mental health including training programs for professionals and the promotion of public awareness on issues relating to the mental health development in children and their families

Selection Criteria:

  • Tertiary qualifications in Psychology, and current accreditation/registration as a Psychologist with AHPRA.
  • Current NSW Working With Children Check
  • Demonstrated effective verbal, written and electronic communication
  • Demonstrated high levels of clinical experience in the provision of child and family counselling services to children 0-12 years of age.
  • Ability to plan and coordinate client care independently and operate effectively within a multidisciplinary team.
  • Strong computer literacy, with competency in the use of Microsoft Word, Excel, ppt and Access database software applications
  • Applicants must possess a current “C” Class Open Driver’s License valid in NSW. Failure to keep that license will impact on your ability to hold this position.
