About the Role

This is an experienced research assistant position involving complex in vitro and in vivo techniques in the fields of diabetes and cardiovascular disease, with scope of interest including lipid metabolism, mitochondrial biology and utilisation of gene editing techniques for discovery of novel therapeutic targets. This position offers an opportunity to join a young, dynamic and diverse research team that has multiple internal and external collaborations, including in the UK and USA, which supports a globalist approach to research and scientific discovery.

Duties

In this role you will be expected to:

  • Perform research on specified topics, including researching current literature for methods and trends and subsequent evaluation of those methods
  • Write research progress reports, including summarising test results of participating investigators, and assist in the preparation of papers for publication
  • Execute designated experiments, including the procurement of space, supplies and related equipment; prepare graphs and other illustrations to facilitate the interpretation of research findings; and to maintain knowledge of health care trends through reading, conferences and seminars
  • Translate and interpret data and assist in the planning of data presentations
  • Assist in the design and implementation of statistical techniques and computer data systems, including establishing coding formats for future scientific research data collection
  • Assist in judging the validity of data obtained from experimental procedures and recommend additional tests and/or modifications
  • Instruct students and others in methods and instrument operation.
  • Respond to requests for technical information from various public and private agencies and from individuals
  • Assure compliance with quality and safety programmes
  • Produce or contribution to the production of conference and seminar papers and publications from research
  • Be involvement in professional activities including, subject to availability of funds, attendance at conferences and seminars in the field of expertise
  • Perform limited administrative functions, primarily concerned with own area of research
  • Develop a limited amount of research related material for teaching or other purposes with appropriate guidance from other staff
  • Perform experimental design and operation of advanced laboratory and technical equipment or conduct of advanced research procedures
  • Have proactive attendance at meetings associated with research
  • Provide advice within the field of research to postgraduate students

Skills and Experience

You will have:

· Strong research experience in molecular and cellular biology including cell culture, cloning, RNA extraction, quantitative PCR, protein isolation and western blotting is essential. Experience in transfections and CRISPR Cas9 would be highly advantageous

· Additional necessities include strong expertise in preclinical models, specifically, husbandry, metabolic phenotyping (glucose tolerance testing, EchoMRI, metabolic caging), gavage and drug administration. Experience in immunoprecipitation, lipid extraction, data analysis and problem solving are also advantageous.

· Academic knowledge of a health science discipline, such as public health, microbiology, biochemistry, anatomy, pathology, dental hygiene or medical technology

· Advanced study or demonstrated capacity for health science research that is generally associated with a science degree with honours and experience as a research assistant or an equivalent combination of education and progressively responsible work experience.
