About the role

As a systems administrator/engineer, you'll be joining an established team of experienced technical staff in a platforms team, as part of a business that is privately-held, financially stable, and achieving significant growth.

We have an operational environment of:

  • Linux (Ubuntu) based servers and storage (provided by cloud infrastructure providers in Australia and North America)
  • A suite of in-house developed analytics applications and supporting open source components
  • A collection of SaaS applications for various business functions
  • A fleet of IoT devices which underpin some of our service offerings
  • Primarily Windows-based workstations for staff

You'll be spending your time:

  • Working in a devops/agile/sprint based environment in a cross-functional team managed by an industry veteran
  • Performing routine systems administration and management tasks (e.g. monitoring, backups, upgrades/patching, security checks, moves/adds/changes, SaaS configuration)
  • Providing field support for IoT devices (site qualification, configuration, deployment, maintenance)
  • Providing end user technology support to Buildings Alive staff (there's not a lot of this, but we'll be honest, there is some!)
  • Contributing to a range of innovation/platform projects from a systems perspective.

Occasionally assisting with out of business hours work (we don't run a 24x7 roster but occasionally there's an operational requirement).

Benefits and perks

We offer a range of benefits including:

  • tools of trade (laptop + mobile/mobile service)
  • modern and convenient Sydney CBD office (located close to Town Hall or Museum and with end of trip facilities)
  • flexible and remote working options
  • quarterly team/social events and an annual team retreat
  • annual performance and remuneration review
  • career development and growth opportunities including an annual learning and development allowance
  • employee share scheme

Skills and experience

From a technical perspective, you'll likely have:

  • A degree in a relevant field (e.g. computer science, information systems) or a combination of industry training and practical experience
    • Linux (preferably Ubuntu) administration knowledge and experience equivalent at least to that required to achieve Linux Professional Institute – LPIC-1 Administrator / LPIC-2 Engineer certifications or similar
    • Windows 10 Pro (end user, not server) administration experience equivalent at least to the level required to achieve Microsoft Certified Solutions Associate certification or similar
  • 2-3 years of systems administration experience across Linux and Windows environments
    • Hands on / practical knowledge of general networking, routing, security, and internet services (DNS, HTTP servers, SMTP etc)
    • Preferably with services from major cloud computing (IaaS / PaaS) providers, preferably Rackspace and AWS
  • Experience with Unix shell (bash) and Python scripting, with Windows PowerShell as a bonus
  • Office 365 service management experience
  • An awareness of contemporary information security practices
  • Some exposure to cloud infrastructure / cloud application migration processes – rehosting, replatforming, refactoring
  • Experience with task management and ticketing tools such as Atlassian Jira would be useful
  • Any experience with or awareness of working with software engineers would be helpful

At a personal level you'll bring:

  • Excellent communication (written/spoken) and interpersonal skills, including when working with remote team members
  • A strong customer service attitude with excellent problem solving skills
  • The desire to develop your technical skills and career and willingness to take on additional responsibilities to help us grow
  • An appreciation of our company culture and values – see https://www.buildingsalive.com/about/work-with-us/
