Curtin Sport & Recreation

Curtin University Sport and Recreation manage University sporting facilities, services and programs for students, staff, alumni and the broader community. Curtin Stadium is the home of sport and recreation administration, housing the main sports arena, health & fitness centre, multipurpose courts and the Dome.

Your new role

In support of the deliberate commitments expressed through our University’s Strategic Plan, Reconciliation Action Plan and Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander Employment and Engagement Strategy, the filling of this position is intended to constitute a special/equal opportunity measure under section 8(1) of the Racial Discrimination Act 1975 (Cth), and section 51 of the Equal Opportunity Act 1984 (WA). The position is therefore only open to Aboriginal or Torres Strait Islander applicants.

Commencing as soon as possible, an exciting opportunity has arisen for a Sports & Recreation Assistant to join our Curtin Sport & Recreation department. This position will focus on providing operational and logistical support to the Sports & Recreation Program Coordinators and Sports & Recreation Manager in the delivery of the various sports competitions, programs, recreation activities and kids holiday sporting programs organised for the Curtin Community.  In addition there will be an element of planning, promoting and implementing strategies which increase and enhance Indigenous and culturally and linguistically diverse (CaLD) student participation in physical activity and remove barriers to participation. You will have a role in assisting the planning for new programs in this space and then you will be directly involved in the delivery and operational management of programs aimed at CaLD and Indigenous cohorts. 

This position is broad ranging in its scope and requires someone who is flexible and able to manage a range of diverse activities. This is an excellent opportunity for an ambitious incumbent to gain experience in the sport industry.

The ideal incumbent will have a keen interest in the business of sport supported by a strong work ethic, excellent time management and organisational skills accompanied with the ability to meet deadlines. Any experience in program delivery or development will be looked upon favourably as will experience working with Children.

You will bring to the role

  • Demonstrated computer literacy, showing sound skills in standard Microsoft Office applications (eg. Word, Excel and Outlook.) Additional experience with booking software and fixturing software would be useful but you will receive training in our specific systems.
  • Current Working with Children check
  • Demonstrated effective self-reliance skills including time management and organisational skills, ability to meet deadlines, proven scheduling/prioritising skills and initiative
  • Effective oral and written communication skills with cross cultural sensitivity.
  • Demonstrated ability to work autonomously as well as effectively as a team member.
  • Demonstrated interest and participation in sports and recreation activities. The ability to umpire sports would be considered desirable
  • Demonstrated knowledge of and prior experience in organising sporting and recreational competitions and activities.
  • Sound understanding of Social Media channels
  • Demonstrated ability to deliver programs to indigenous communities. The ability to conceive, plan and design indigenous focussed programs would be considered very favourably
