Field Worker Natural Areas

  • 1 x Permanent Full time - 38 hours per week, 1 x Fixed Term Part-time 4 days per week

City of Newcastle (CN) has an opportunity for 2 experienced Field Workers - Natural Area, to join our Parks and Recreation Team at Blackbutt Reserve.

The role of a Field Worker is to create and maintain wildlife exhibits using their knowledge and formal qualifications in the areas of native animal care, animal husbandry and quality wildlife park maintenance.  As a person with solid communication skills, Field Workers work with and train volunteers, park staff and contract personnel to promote the unique facilities and wildlife exhibits at Blackbutt Reserve.   

The role also involves planning, identifying problems, producing reports, developing and delivering effective presentations / programs to a range of audiences, including schools and community groups.  Field Workers plan and perform educational activities with reptiles, and enjoy sharing information, direction and leadership to volunteers on how to deliver effective presentations and activities.

Field Workers also operate and maintain horticultural and turf machinery / equipment / tools and provide regular machinery maintenance to the Blackbutt Wildlife Park. 

To be successful in this job you will have:

Essential

  • Sound knowledge and formal qualifications covering the areas of captive native animal care, animal husbandry and quality wildlife park maintenance (relevant, recent experience will also be considered)
  • Outstanding communication skills, and feel comfortable in addressing groups of people
  • Ability to work in a team-based environment
  • Proven ability to maintain accurate written records, daily reports and diaries
  • Proven ability to plan and perform onsite and offsite environmental educational activities with reptiles.
  • Experience in safely operating and maintaining horticultural and turf maintenance machinery / equipment / tools
  • Proven ability to undertake general park maintenance activities
  • Ability work a flexible roster including weekend shifts, public holidays and after-hours activities.
  • Work unsupervised using initiative and problem-solving skills
  • Current Class C Driver’s Licence (Manual) and Working with Children Check.

Highly Desirable

  • Tertiary qualifications in horticulture and natural resource management.
  • Experience in working within the animal industry
  • Experience in small scale landscape construction works.
