About the VGSO
The Victorian Government Solicitor's Office (VGSO) vision is to be the Victorian Government's trusted legal partner.

The VGSO provides responsive legal services exclusively for the Victorian Government and public sector. Our place within government ensures we are at the centre of legal change, reform and problem-solving. We operate as a service-driven legal professional practice and strive for excellence in this competitive environment. In all aspects of our operations, we aim to role model and live by our values: Responsiveness, Integrity, Insight, Collaboration and Excellence.

About the branch and role
The Public Law & Planning Branch of the VGSO provides litigation services and legal advice in a broad range of areas, including:

  • The development, application and interpretation of legislation (including in administrative decision-making);
  • Merits and judicial review of administrative decisions;
  • Planning, environment and heritage law;
  • Human rights and anti-discrimination law;
  • State and federal constitutional and electoral law;
  • Public sector governance and integrity; and
  • Integrity body (including parliamentary) inquiries.

We are currently seeking a senior and highly experience legal practitioner to join us as Special Counsel. This role will focus on providing advice, and leading litigation, in high risk and significant public law matters. You will be part of a team with deep experience in public law, but what you will bring is your capacity to lead the delivery of legal services in response to the diverse challenges of government practice.

Key responsibilities

  • Provide highly specialised legal expertise and technical legal advice across government, with a focus on public law matters, both in the litigious and purely advisory contexts;
  • Provide strategic leadership to ad hoc teams responding to high risk matters, ensuring the provision of high quality and responsive legal services and advice in alignment with the VGSO's Strategic Plan and the VGSO values; and
  • Proactively advance the VGSO's client strategies, practice areas and client relationships in order to further develop positive existing client relationships and establish new business opportunities.

About the successful applicant
You are regarded as an expert; a senior and highly experienced legal practitioner with a strong understanding of the structure and culture of government and of the political and legal sensitivities of operating within the public sector.

You are extremely flexible: you are adept at delivering legal services in a manner which is fit for purpose, whether that is providing robust written advice for a legal audience or explaining a litigation strategy to a ministerial one. You can lead teams and manage projects, whether their timelines are short or longer term. You rise to a challenge, but you bring others along with you.

As such, you will have the capacity to contribute strategic insight and drive continuous improvement. You will also have demonstrated business development and relationship management experience and have the ability to develop positive and effective client relationships in order to grow the VGSO and its practice areas.

Benefits
In exchange for your hard work you will receive: competitive remuneration, training and development opportunities and 17.5% annual leave loading. The VGSO embraces flexibility and welcomes a conversation to help you achieve work-life balance.

How to apply
If this sounds like the opportunity for you, apply now! Applications must include a cover letter and resume that outlines your experience relevant to this role. Please note you are not required to respond to the Key Selection Criteria separately.

To find out more about this role, please view the position description attached. Alternatively, you can contact Stephanie Lou, People and Culture Advisor, on (03) 9032 3020.
