Job ad - Senior Penguin Keeper.

Are you passionate about conservation and creating incredible guest experiences for our multitude of visitors?  Do you want to be an integral part of our dedicated team of penguin Keepers, working in our multi-faceted Sub -Antarctic Penguin Exhibit, housing a waddle of King and a raft of Gentoo penguins?  This state of the art exhibit features many world first components. If interested, we have a fintastic opportunity for you to join our dynamic Curatorial team as Senior Penguin Keeper.

About the Role:

The Senior Penguin Keeper is responsible for assisting the Penguin Supervisor in the effective daily management of the Sub Antarctic Penguin collection and ensuring best practise animal husbandry for the animals under the teams care. This includes acquisition, quarantine and daily care, in addition to conducting internal /external research, monitoring activities, and implementing Public talks, presentations, and guest interactions. You will maintain consistently high standards of displays presentation throughout all public and behind scenes areas of displays and be fully versed in the exhibit’s life support systems operation.


As the Senior Penguin Keeper, you must be able to undertake the duties of the Penguin Supervisor in their absence and assist in the effective management of the penguin team, including the cross skilling of staff, scheduling and implementation of husbandry activities, product quality control, cost control, as well as administration and reporting for the team.


About You:

You are an enthusiastic, motivated, energetic and suitably experienced animal keeper. You are observant and pay attention to detail, with particular reference to monitoring a colony of sub-Antarctic penguins. You are a good and professional communicator, have sound planning, time-management, interpersonal and organizational skills, and know how to identify and solve problems independently. 

Ability to develop behavioural management plans for animals.

Ability to assist with the continual development of the entire penguin team – people and penguins alike.

Experienced in penguin/bird breeding behaviours, artificial incubation and all aspects of chick hatching and rearing. Experience with other terrestrial or aquatic species would also be helpful

Experienced in first aid care of penguins/birds and supporting veterinary inspections.

Experienced in general aquatic husbandry and experience in maintaining life support systems and have proven the ability to develop systems to improve efficiencies


You hold a Bachelor’s degree in Zoology or Biology or an equivalent Animal Care Diploma, or a minimum of 3 years relevant animal husbandry experience.   An alternative of expertise in penguin/bird husbandry is also given much consideration.

Key Competencies:

You have prior experience in maintaining living collections, and will have worked extensively with penguins or similar species, with a proven ability to work alone and in a team environment, with peers and Supervisors alike.  You also perform well under duress typical of dealing with living organisms. You have an affinity for working with guests and customer service comes naturally.

You hold a minimum of Rescue diver certification with a valid dive medical, or be able to achieve this within a short time frame. Drysuit and full face mask training would be an advantage. 

Typical Physical demands:

Able to lift 50 lbs. to shoulder height, can carry materials, transport boxes, buckets, and frozen fish throughout the facility.

You are able to work on a roster.

Standing, walking and working for long periods in a cold environment, and in close confines.

This role carries diving responsibilities.
