About the National Drug Research Institute (NDRI)

The NDRI mission is to conduct and disseminate high quality research that supports evidence informed policy, strategies and practice to prevent and minimise alcohol and other drug-related health, social and economic harms among individuals, families and communities in Australia. It is a World Health Organization Collaborating Centre for Alcohol and Drug Abuse. NDRI research has informed and contributed significantly to policy and evidence-based practice in Australia and internationally.
Research from the NDRI Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander Research Program contributes to the prevention and reduction of the burden of harm caused by alcohol and other drugs (AOD) amongst Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander people and communities.  The Research:
  • Focuses on the inter-related topics of changing patterns of AOD use, factors related to, and the impact of, harmful use on individuals, families and communities, efficient and effective provision of services, and improved policy responses.
  • Is based on well-established partnerships with Aboriginal community controlled health organisations, with Aboriginal community stakeholders and organisations actively involved in all aspects of research from planning through to translation into policy and strategies.
Your New Role

A unique and exciting opportunity has arisen for the right person to join the NDRI Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander Research Program and further enhance NDRI as a centre of best practice in conducting community driven research. You will particularly contribute to academic leadership in an established multidisciplinary team of dynamic researchers who undertake original and community-driven research that aims to change policy and improve outcomes for Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander people and communities in relation to alcohol and other drug use. You will work closely with an Aboriginal or Torres Strait Islander person who will be part of the team leadership and your role will support the work of the team and the team’s comprehensive and community relevant research agenda.
The role primarily involves research based activities, making major and innovative contributions to the field of Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander AOD research, research translation and capacity building. Your activities will be expected to be of national and international standing.
Criteria. You will:
  • Display high levels of performance and academic achievement in Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander health and/or social research;
  • Demonstrate the capacity work closely with Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander people and within their communities;
  • Demonstrate the capacity to undertake your own program of research consistent with the Strategic Plan current for NDRI and Curtin University, including being a chief investigator in applications for nationally competitive research grants and/or fellowships;
  • Demonstrate a history of publishing high quality international standard research outputs, consistent with that expected of a Curtin senior academic
  • Demonstrate the capacity to support research translation with Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander people and communities;
  • Disseminate research findings through research teaching, seminars, lectures, workshops and conferences; and,
  • Demonstrate a capacity and commitment to attracting and supervising doctoral, masters and honours students, and provide academic mentoring and support to early- and mid-career researchers.
