Technology and Automation Manager

From humble beginnings almost 70 years ago, John Holland has been driving positive change in Australia, and is now one of the nation’s leading infrastructure and property companies.

We work in Australia, New Zealand and South East Asia offering services from infrastructure and property development, to rail and building.

By finding solutions to complex challenges, we transform communities to make them easier to move around, more connected and better to live in.

We are currently seeking to engage a Technology and Automation Manager to join our Technology, Engineering and Knowledge (TEK) team. This role can be based in either our Brisbane, Melbourne or Pyrmont (Sydney) office.

Key responsibilities of the role include:

Driving the design, delivery and implementation of Technology & Automation activities in accordance with the contractual requirements, coordinating off/on-site engineering functions for allocated projects to achieve schedule and commercial objectives and efficient support in both precontracts and design phases.

Ensure that the process of network design, device selection, delivery and commissioning preparation is planned, managed, documented, resourced and executed to meet stakeholders technical, budgetary and schedule requirements as per contract obligations.

Provide specialist advice in respect to quality and appropriateness of materials, equipment and systems to ensure compliance to specification and ensure constructability, providing strategic direction on any correction or modification required.

Provide leadership and technical direction to your team, project staff, design consultants, sub-contractors, technology vendors and operators to ensure commissioning and operational objectives are taken into consideration throughout the delivery of the project (including design phase).

Oversight and implementation of related activities as per John Holland and project specific requirements, policy and procedure; coordinating activities to safely achieve schedule, performance and financial objectives whilst ensuring all related issues are integrated and considered during design and construction phase activities.

Actively engage with tender and project personnel to manage and control risk and ensure compliance, assisting with the development of associated JH staff by training and upskilling of the business.

Accurately undertake forecasts of costs and revenue and utilise corrective action in line with JH’s authority and reporting frameworks to maximise the profit margin, negotiating appropriate contract terms and conditions with clients, subcontractors and suppliers in liaison with project management and TEK management.

There will be a requirement to travel as part of the role to service tenders / projects, which may extend to international travel as well as domestic.

To be successful in this role, the following skills are required;

Minimum 10 years + experience in delivering large and complex building & infrastructure projects involving leading Network Design programs of work.

Experience in the establishment and preparation of operating procedures, maintenance programs/schedules, and operation and maintenance of manuals; development and delivery of operator training programmes and implementing new Asset Management Systems and/or integration into existing client-based systems.

Absolute appreciation of the importance of safe working and ‘One Team’ approach with strong people and performance management and stakeholder relations experience.

Ability to engage and assimilate with a team of well-established professionals in both tender and delivery stage and create positive relationships internally and externally.

An affinity for continuous improvement and innovation, applying learnings to ‘real world’ tender and project delivery environments.

Master’s Degree in Intelligent Buildings or equivalent is preferred, with relevant Diploma of project management in engineering science, building, construction or bachelor’s degree in mechanical / electrical engineering / ICT (or equivalent).

John Holland is up for the challenge of transforming lives.

From Parliament House to the Alice to Darwin Rail Link, from the MCG’s Great Southern Stand to Sydney Metro, we’ve had a hand in the Australia we all know today. We are currently involved in delivering all many of Australia’s largest infrastructure projects, as well as significant property and urban renewal projects. Whatever we face, the heart of what we do is creating people-centred solutions to complex challenges and opportunities. We think deeply about what we do and how it affects communities. We push boundaries and innovate, gain trust through our actions and whatever the project, we’re in it for the long, long term.

We are committed to building, valuing and promoting diversity and inclusiveness across John Holland.
