Science Operations Officer - Ipswich State High School

This is a OO2 progressional position as per the Role Description. The successful applicant will be appointed to the OO2 classification with eligibility for progression to the OO3 level (as per QLD Public Service Award 2015) once specific criteria have been met. Salary rate shown is reflective of OO2 to OO3 classification range.

About the Role

The role operates as part of a team of three Scientific Operations Officer in a school of 1850+ students. The duties of the Science Operations Officer may include:

  • Liaising with science teaching staff on their needs for practical work and maintaining systems for recording allocations and use of materials and equipment.
  • Provide advice as required to science teacher staff on technical components of the curriculum.
  • Handling Chemical Materials and developing and maintaining safe chemical storage/handling/preparation and disposal of laboratory wastes in a safe manner and in accordance with departmental guidelines.
  • Prepare chemical solutions of known concentration from bulk supplies including concentrated acids, stains and media for classroom general use.
  • Laboratory support including demonstration, preparation and set up samples/demonstrations.
  • Preparing class sets of equipment and associated scientific materials for practical classroom use and advise and assist science teaching staff in safety matters relating to the science laboratory including carrying our trial experiments prior to laboratory lessons.
  • Maintaining scientific materials by collecting and caring for flora and fauna in accordance with current handling and prevention of cruelty regulations.
  • Maintenance and Storage of science equipment and materials, servicing and cleaning apparatus/equipment and reporting damages.
  • Conduct safety audits, annual stocktakes and ordering as required.
