Sport & Recreation Program Leader

About the Centre

The Bridge Project

Since 2006 The YMCA Bridge Project has been supporting young people and adults in the justice system to make positive changes to their lives and reduce the likelihood of offending or reoffending, through social and economic engagement in both custodial centres and in communities. The Bridge Project's main departments are as follows;

  • Employment
  • Education & training
  • Sport and recreation services
  • ReBuild (social enterprise facility maintenance business)

Key Elements of the Role

The Sport & Recreation Program Leader will promote and improve the health and fitness, and physical and mental well-being, of male prisoners at Ravenhall Correctional Centre (RCC) through the delivery of purpose-driven and engaging sport and recreation programs and activities.

  • Assist with the facilitation of meaningful and purpose-driven sport and recreation activities
  • Assess current equipment for program development and delivery and equipment that may be needed
  • Fitness assessments for participants where required
  • Promoting Bridge Project programs to prisoners and other key support agencies in the community and the RCC 
  • Accurate statistical data collection, including daily attendance statistical data and participant feedback
  • Upload participant case notes/activities/incidents onto the Gateway system
  • Build and maintain effective relationships with key Stakeholders, prison staff and the prisoner population
  • Display exemplary levels of professionalism and integrity
  • Perform other duties as required

The role of YMCA Sport and Rec Program Leader will include assisting in the development, delivery & evaluation of a range of sport & recreation programs/activities including:

Stadium Sports

  • Basketball
  • Volleyball
  • Indoor Soccer
  • Football
  • Table Tennis
  • Badminton
  • Other

Strength & Conditioning

  • Circuit Training
  • Weights Programs
  • Fitness Challenges
  • Boot Camps
  • Other

Therapeutic

  • Yoga
  • Meditation
  • Stretching/Relaxation
  • Other

Other

  • Special Events
  • Community Events
  • Fundraisers

Programs and activities delivered in the main sport and recreation facility as well as in smaller unit/yard populations. Areas and facilities for program delivery include:

  • Indoor stadium
  • Group fitness room
  • Strength and conditioning weights room (machines only)
  • Unit circuit training stations
  • Unit basketball courts
  • Football oval

Selection Criteria

  • Proven sport and recreation expertise, experience and delivery
  • Development, implementation and facilitation of sport and recreation programs/activities
  • Proven experience and ability in coaching/leading medium to large groups
  • Proven ability to positively engage and build relationships with people from all backgrounds and cultures  

Qualifications

  • Cert III and IV in Fitness favourable but not a necessity
  • Sporting/fitness/coaching qualifications highly favourable
  • Current driver's licence & vehicle
