File Manager for z/OS Level 3 Customer Support Engineer

This job role is Level 3 customer support for the IBM File Manager for z/OS product. This is a highly technical, mainframe product support role. As part of the File Manger engineering team, the L3 support engineer will receive customer reported problems via Level 2 support that require further investigation to diagnose the problem. In some cases, a user error or a workaround may be identified. In others, a source code defect may be identified requiring a code fix.

The candidate should come into the role with previous hands-on experience working on the IBM mainframe platform in development, systems programming, product administration or software support. Knowledge of File Manager is not essential as initial product training will be provided, but the candidate will be expected to develop deeper product expertise by doing the job.  Knowledge of related mainframe subsystems such as databases and transaction control systems would be an advantage, but the candidate will also be expected to develop a range of these skills on the job, through a mix of training opportunities and self-learning. The candidate must have the aptitude and the willingness to embrace unfamiliar technology and learn new skills.

The candidate must have strong analytical skills and be able to demonstrate their ability to collect and analyse information on the mainframe, problem-solve and make decisions. The candidate should be comfortable working under pressure caused by external factors like time, customer satisfaction, management escalations and sales opportunities.

For the right candidate, this L3 support role could lead to a Developer role with the File Manager engineering team.

Required skills:

  • 10+ years development experience on IBM zOS mainframes
  • one or more of the following: CICS, IMS ,DB2, MQ or RACF (or equivalent)
  • at least one mainframe programming language such as COBOL or PLI
  • ISPF user interface
  • Batch processing with JCL, CLISTS, REXX , ISPF dialog services
  • Reading and analysing dumps, either raw or formatted using tools like Fault Analyzer or IPCS

Desirable skills:

  • Experience with File Manager or a similar product
  • Systems programming experience
  • Assembler or PLX programming
  • Unix, Windows, Java and Eclipse – but not be the primary skills!
  • SCLM source code management
  • Jira and Github
