Materials & Processing Engineer

Role Accountabilities

This position is based at our Sunshine, Victoria site and reports to the Sothern Region Manufacturing Manager. Through strong leadership and management skills, your primary areas of focus will be:

  • The management, handling and processing of raw materials at the Sunshine site;
  • Ensuring correct generation of material blending and processing into the PVC/PE production areas;
  • Identifying, researching and developing materials and process development opportunities to produce PVC/PE pipe with the most economic balance of pipe quality properties, product material costs and best processing at high-speed outputs;
  • Achieving all requirements for process and materials development projects, while maintaining consistency and minimal variation and meeting customer performance standards.

Your responsibilities will include:

  • Assisting and supporting the Southern Region Management team in implementing the 5S program across the sites for an organised and safe workspace;
  • Leading proactive risk management initiatives, ensuring Certificate to Work, JSEA’s, SOP’s and other risk management processes are implemented;
  • Ensuring activities in Mix Plant and Extrusion are conducted in accordance with established Vinidex safety guidelines and Standard Operating Procedures (SOP’s);
  • Using Extrusion Principles to establish and maintain best practice processing specifications;
  • Managing the Extrusion lines, machines, equipment, specifications & limits to achieve process optimisation, variation reduction and cost reduction;
  • Managing the fixed and variable quality and process properties for the optimisation of products on production extrusion lines;
  • Documentation of Quality Function Deployment, Customer Demands, Quality Characteristics, Product Characteristics, Manufacturing Characteristics, Design Controls; Process Control Charts and Limits (UCL/LCL, USL/LSL, etc.);
  • Identifying process capability and special causes to improve continual compliance to processes;
  • Conducting root cause analysis of issues and hands on involvement in troubleshooting and prevention;
  • Documenting and updating Standard Manufacturing Practice (SMP’s) for all product types
  • Critical analysis of performance & capability data of all machines and equipment to improve and guide purchasing decisions;
  • Developing raw material specifications that relate to the Vinidex established process control & capability and not the nominal specifications from the suppliers;
  • Maintain traceability in the factory of raw materials from receipt, QC testing, to start date of usage to tracking through the process to product quality issues prevention & troubleshooting;
  • Maintaining effective relationships with internal and external stakeholders through collaboration, consultation and inclusion in the manufacturing processes and new developments.

Experience Required

To be successful in this role you will possess:

  • Relevant tertiary qualifications in a mechanical, chemical or science discipline;
  • Relevant industry experience of 3-5 yrs;
  • Demonstrated technical, professional and product knowledge;
  • Strong analytical skills;
  • Change management principles with focus on outcomes and resilience;
  • Proficiency in the use of software tools for project planning, project reporting and graphical presentation and communication of ideas;
  • Experience in the leadership and management of a small to medium sized team
