Senior Journalist

This is a chance to further your career in a digital-first newsroom, creating quality local content for our audience, where and how they want it. This is a full-time position, 38 hours per week. The role will be based at Cleveland, and the successful candidate will also have the opportunity to work with journalists from our other south-east Queensland sites.

The senior journalist will assist in managing the newsroom, including training and mentoring journalists. As part of the editorial team, the senior journalist will exhibit good judgement and leadership, along with the highest ethical standards and a strong work ethic.

Responsibilities of the role include (but are not limited to):

  • Deputising for the editor as required
  • Helping drive programs and strategies to build our audiences
  • Assisting in the execution of our agreed editorial strategy
  • Being committed to the NewsNow strategy, ensuring content is developed in a way which builds audience engagement
  • Producing photos and videos as required
  • Practising journalistic excellence and maintaining our editorial values of credibility, accuracy, independence, high quality journalism and community empathy
  • Collaboration and building a team
  • Participation in regular meetings and structured training where required
  • Ensuring workplace health and safety compliance by adhering to policies, guidelines and practices

To be successful in this role you will be able to demonstrate the following:

  • Ability to provide copy for multiple mastheads
  • Ability to prioritise work and meet deadlines
  • Significant experience of working within and leading a newsroom
  • High attention to detail
  • Ability to communicate with all levels of staff
  • The ability to work flexible and irregular hours
  • An emphasis on compliance with company and editorial department policies
  • Appropriate journalistic experience, skills and knowledge
  • A genuine interest in digital media, including social media
  • A community focus
