Apprentice Carpenter

Cessnock City Council provides a diverse range of services and facilities for the residents within the local government area, as well as visitors to the area. We employ approximately 380 employees and are situated within the Hunter Valley of New South Wales, approximately 120 kilometres north of Sydney and 40 kilometres west of Newcastle.

A new opportunity has become available for an enthusiastic and willing to learn Apprentice Carpenter to jump start their career with Council. Seeking a recent school leaver who enjoys working as part of a team, the Apprentice Carpenter will gain knowledge and hands on experience providing timely and effective carpentry service, under supervision, for maintenance and construction of Council’s building and facilities.

Under supervision this role will also be required to:

  • Carry out on-site carpentry works, in a cost effective manner and within pre-determined time targets, quality standards and specifications for reactive and planned maintenance and building renewal projects and construction of new building and facilities;
  • Assist with the maintenance of security systems, keys and locks;
  • Assist with the removal of graffiti, floor sanding and maintenance;
  • Liaise with the internal Council customers and external Public, Sporting and Community Groups on buildings services; and
  • Attend the relevant TAFE course to meet apprenticeship requirements.

To succeed in this role, you will have:

  • Minimum completion of Year 10 or equivalent with passes in English and Mathematics or equivalent and a genuine interest in developing a career in the Carpentry Trade;
  • Demonstrated ability to effectively work in a team environment, participate in group situations, and encourage teamwork and cooperation;
  • Demonstrated willingness to undertake training, learn new skills and trial and develop new work practices; and
  • Committed to providing a quality service to customers.
Remuneration and Benefits:
  • As per the Local Government (State) Award 2017
  • 9.5% superannuation
  • 4-Year Apprenticeship
  • 38 hours per week
  • 19 day month and RDO scheme
  • Picturesque Hunter Valley location!
