Purpose of the role

Executing agreed programming strategies and ensuring the smooth delivery and transmission of assigned channels through effective scheduling and inventory management, timely and clear communication and accurate data management.

Accountabilities 

  • To work closely with the Head of Programming and Director of Branded Services to devise and execute programming strategies to maximise ratings and reach performance while upholding the channel brands;
  • To schedule both the linear and On Demand channels, maintaining detailed forward planning documents and entering schedules into relevant systems, focussing on accuracy and deadlines;
  • To communicate the schedules and amendments to all relevant parties in an efficient and timely manner and be the key contact for all internal schedule queries for the assigned channels;
  • To preview and evaluate programmes, taking into account the channel brand and target audience and make recommendations to the Head of Programming;
  • To have a detailed knowledge of every programme scheduled on the channels and its relationship with the audience;
  • To work closely with the Acquisitions and Media Supplies departments on programme delivery, durations and the proposed transmission dates, ensuring that all programmes will be available when required;
  • Liaise closely with Presentation Schedulers on schedule timings, programme formats and break durations;
  • To manage the channels’ programme inventory, monitoring stock/run levels, checking package/contract information and utilising inventory with maximum efficiency;
  • Viewer liaison including responding to feedback from viewers in a timely and appropriate manner;
  • To ensure audience research is effectively utilised to properly inform content decisions and highlight future opportunities and weaknesses across BBCW’s channels and the competitive set, reacting decisively to declining performance in a considered and strategic manner;
  • Prepare monthly promo briefs for up-coming content and check accuracy of final promos before transmission;
  • Ensure that the channels achieve ANZ close captioning targets and remain within budgeted parameters; and
  • Ensure the channels are compliant with BBC Studio’s Editorial Framework and Guidelines, with all content subject to internal compliance and local classification review (appropriate warnings and/or consumer advice assigned).

Scope & Impact

Responsible for executing the agreed programming strategy for assigned channels, achieving set performance targets and delivering accurate and timely schedules.

Key point of contact for internal programming enquiries.

Strategic Planning & Decision Making

Working in conjunction with the Head of Programming to develop and execute functional/departmental strategy to achieve key business objectives in the territory.

Relationships

Daily contact with Head of Programming and Programming Assistant.

Regular (at least weekly) face-to-face liaison with Channels Marketing, Audience Research, Creative,

Presentation, Acquisitions and Media Supplies teams.

Occasional contact with external suppliers: Foxtel, Fetch, AI Media and materials.

Knowledge & Skills

The successful candidate should be able to demonstrate the following:

  • Programming (knowledge and experience of scheduling and strategy with a good understanding of television audiences and their relationship to content)
  • Local market (understanding of the Australian and NZ TV marketplace and local competitors)
  • Editorial judgement
  • Creativity and initiative
  • Experience with channel management software
  • A detailed knowledge of and passion for UK programming and an ability to evaluate with an international view
  • Excellent Excel and strong general IT skills
  • Excellent written and verbal communication skills
  • Influencing and networking (play a collaborative role within the cross-functional team)
