Each year, thousands of Aussie kids who are sick, disadvantaged or have special needs, get support from Variety - the Children's Charity when they need it most.  We are committed to all kids having the ability to reach their full potential, no matter what challenges have been thrown their way in life.

Variety Queensland assists kids in Queensland through the granting of equipment and services, programs and experiences.

Variety – the Children’s Charity is an international charity made up of Tents, located in 44 locations around the world.  Variety Queensland Inc is Tent 76 and is one of seven Tents located in Australia. 

We have a vacancy for a Member on our Board of Management.

About the Role:

Our board members are valued Business and Community Leaders who provide governance to the organisation, represent it to the community, and accept the ultimate legal responsibility for it.

The position is voluntary.

Board meetings are held once each month at the Variety QLD office from 5:30pm to 7:30pm.  The role requires a small amount of time commitment outside of this as with any NFP organisation.  The role may include involvement in one or more of our board committees, which meet separately to the monthly board meeting.

Board Members are strongly encouraged to participate in the events organised by us.

Qualifications & Skills 

  • Demonstrated business acumen and instinct, a strategic thinker with experience in business leadership including people and change management
  • Well-connected with established business and social networks
  • Excellent interpersonal skills with effective oral and written communication skills, and a proven ability to communicate and influence at all levels with a diverse cross-section of people
  • Ability to function effectively as a collaborative team member and cultivate positive working relationships
  • Committed to work within the parameters of our values
  • Prior board experience particularly in the not-for-profit sector with a working knowledge of director’s duties and responsibilities, corporate governance and statutory compliance requirements is preferred
  • Experience in managing areas of major risk to an organization
  • Blue Card eligibility
  • Compassion and empathy – ability to work sensitively with families whose children we are assisting.
  • A desire and drive to build a community where kids in need are supported, included and equal.
  • We are particularly interested in expressions of interest from candidates with professional experience in the following areas:
    • Public Relations & Media
    • Social & Community Impact, particularly in the areas of disability & disadvantage with regard to children
    • Corporate, PAFs and Government connections and the ability to open doors to funding
