Role Overview
Reef Check Australia (RCA) requires a General Manager to lead our committed and passionate team into the next phase of growth. Reporting to the Board, the General Manager will manage RCA business operations, with a focus on business development and charitable fundraising to enable community engagement in marine citizen science.

The General Manager will manage the organisation’s reach, impact, ethics and financial growth. Developing and meeting strategic, operational and budgetary objectives, coupled with a proven ability to identify opportunities for improvement and growth, is central to this position. The General Manager must maintain a strong public profile and relationships with stakeholders (government, community, research institutes and corporate sponsors) to enable RCA to deliver high quality programs and communications in marine conservation and citizen science.

Key Responsibilities

  • Manage the financial and operational performance of the organisation

  • Lead organisational fundraising including corporate sponsorship, grants, proposals and donation programs

  • Develop, implement and report on strategic business initiatives

  • Manage organisational partnerships and alliances for data applications, citizen science, and engagement

  • Direct and oversee program strategy and implementation of community capacity-building programs

  • Oversee strategy for on ground programs such Reef Ambassador and Reef Surveyor programs in our regional hubs

  • Oversee organisational science communication including science reports, website, promotional materials, newsletters, annual report, media

  • Lead the recruitment, development and performance of a small team of staff along with volunteers

  • Manage business and governance reporting, including board reporting, audits, annual reports and regulatory requirements

  • Oversee office systems

  • Be available for occasional travel as required to regional or interstate locations

Mandatory skills and experience

  • Strong management and leadership skills

  • Excellent financial knowledge and expertise

  • Proven experience in the development and implementation of strategic business plans

  • Track record in charitable fund generation including corporate partnerships and fundraising

  • Demonstrated work with volunteer programs and experience delivering community engagement and outreach projects

Desirable skills and experience

  • Science or marine science qualifications desirable

  • Experience in environmental, science or dive industry desirable

  • Current PADI divemaster or above, with experience supervising dive teams (scientific research experience preferred) desirable

Reporting

This position reports to the Reef Check Australia Board of Directors

Conditions of appointment

  • Anticipated to be for an initial contract term of 6 months (potential for extension subject to funding)

  • Salary range (total employment cost) $70k - $100k (pro-rata by negotiation)
