Component Engineer - Optical

We’re looking for a talented Component Engineer (Optical) to join our Component Engineering team. The team provides technical support to Purchasing and draught specification documents based on designs developed by the Product Development group.

Key responsibilities

  • Develop material specifications for WSS optical components.
  • Ensure specification drawings are correct and properly toleranced.
  • Define and source equipment required for the inspection of optical components.
  • Liaise with optical component suppliers.
  • Produce RTV reports for failed components - reports required in order to return parts to vendor.
  • Develop & maintain WI’s, for the use of incoming inspection equipment.
  • Perform or coordinate first article inspection on new components or suppliers
  • Define and analyse Statistical Process Control data and other process metrics for incoming inspection.
  • Develop new suppliers.

Education and necessary skills

  • Degree in Mechanical/ Electrical Engineering, Physics or Optoelectronics.
  • Excellent written and verbal communication skills.
  • Demonstrated ability in the design or specification of optical or fibre optic componentry (e.g. Micro-optic arrays, bulk optics such as mirrors and lenses, diffractive optics).

The ability to use CAD packages such as SolidWorks is desirable as is knowledge of optical engineering or design. Experience with the use of one or more of the following optical metrology equipment: interferometers; optical surface profilers (e.g. Zygo, Veeco Instructments); Shack-Hartmann interferometers, will be high regarded. Experience with the use of optical fibre test and measurement equipment (e.g. optical power meters, laser/ASE light source etc.) will also be highly regarded.
