Mechanical Engineer

The Role:

Do you want to be part of a leading organisation, which dates back 300 years in the shipbuilding industry?

In 2016, Navantia Australia was awarded the AOR sustainment contract to build HMAS Supply and HMAS Stalwart, which is due to commence service with the Royal Australian Navy from mid-2020 and will remain in service for a minimum of 25 years. Navantia Australia will be responsible for the sustainment of both ships along with the Capability Acquisition and Sustainment Group (CASG) and form the AOR System Program Office (AORSPO). 

Navantia Australia currently has an exciting opportunity for a Mechanical Engineer to join the team out of its Garden Island, Sydney office. You will be responsible for conducting mechanical engineering for Auxiliary systems associated to the AOR whole of platform in accordance with N4 and Seaworthiness.

 

Your responsibilities will be to:

  • Support the Platform Design Manager in matters to do with the technical integrity of mechanical systems for the AOR Platform.
  • Adopt Systems Engineering practice in accordance with systems engineering requirements as set out in EIA 632.
  • Take responsibility for the mechanical scope that includes the mechanical components/plants, machinery, piping, HVAC, fire systems, Fuel systems, RAS, safety systems, propulsion, water systems, shaft line and associated control etc.,  as defined in ABR 5518, Auxiliary.
  • Perform System Engineering designs, reviews and validation of contract requirements as a Senior Mechanical Engineer.
  • Utilise FORAN 3D Model developed in Acquisition to visualise, develop, design mechanical schemes as required.
  • Research, develop, design, and develop testing for mechanical components, equipment, systems, and networks.
  • Interpret and document shipyard specifications, contract and Regulatory body requirements, and Commercial standards. Analyse design components relating to DEF (AUST) 5000 requirements. Develop Engineering documents for items in accordance with mission specifications and specific rules & regulations (IMO, Class).
  • Develop Purchase Technical Specifications for materials, mechanical equipment and installations, as required for Engineering Change.
  • Provide technical support to both the Maintenance and Supply Support functions.
  • Support engineering change in accordance with the CEMP and conduct relevant engineering change for the following types :
    • Routine changes carried out as part of maintenance (Upkeep), for example replacing failed components;
    • Obsolescence-driven changes (Updates);
    • System enhancements to deliver better performance or better maintainability (Upgrades)
  • Conduct mechanical trade-off studies to support systems engineering requirements and decision-making; support Systems Engineering Reviews (SRR, SDR, PDR and CDR).
  • Coordinate any test verification activities in accordance with the AOR V&V Plan and issue technical documentation.
  • Conduct Program CSSR and CSR Reviews (or support of).
  •  Coordinate with TSN subcontractors and other resources required to perform related activities.

 

As the ideal candidate, you will have:

  • Tertiary qualifications in Mechanical Engineering or related discipline
  • Proven capable skills and experience  in leading a systems/requirements engineering function
  • Minimum 5 years’ experience within a Naval Mechanical Engineering domain
  • Excellent technical skills and interpersonal skills.
  • Demonstrated ability to operate autonomously using initiative, sound reasoning, listening and decision making skills.
  • Demonstrated ability to deliver results in a high pressure environment
  • Ability to communicate effectively and build positive relationships at all levels of the business and clients. 
  • Australian Citizenship holding or eligible for an Australian Government Security Vetting Agency (AGSVA) Defence Security Clearance to a minimum of Baseline
