The Opportunity

We have a 12-month fixed-term opportunity for a Scientist to join the Translation Research team, based at Bio21 Institute. This role within the Translational Research group is responsible for the evaluation and development of novel protein-based therapeutics, such as recombinant antibodies and other protein mediators that target and modulate the function of specific cell types. This involves developing, validating and performing key biological assays (in vitro or ex vivo) as well as evaluation of the therapeutic candidates in primate studies and in human clinical samples.

Reporting into the Senior Research Scientist, Translational Research, you will:

  • Investigate modes of action of various antibody and other recombinant protein projects
  • Develop and perform in vitro screening assays to identify potential therapeutic candidates
  • Develop and perform flow cytometry based assays to evaluate effector function of various leukocytes
  • Develop and perform flow cytometry based assays to evaluate cytokine production, cell death, cell signalling
  • Utilise molecular biology techniques for the evaluation of cell populations, drug candidates and biomarkers
  • Prepare cell supernatants, cell and tissue extracts for protein analysis
  • Assist senior personnel in the laboratory to carry out experiments
  • Work with non-human primate and human cells and tissues in vitro to evaluate efficacy of therapeutic candidates
  • Prepare experimental protocols and scientific reports
  • Assist in analysis of preclinical toxicity and efficacy testing
  • Provide research support for ongoing clinical trials to evaluate efficacy of therapeutic candidates
  • Present scientific data at Group, Project Team and Departmental level
  • Perform data analysis using routine spreadsheet and graphing platforms and flow cytometry software (Excel, Prism and FlowJo)
  • Maintain lab records
  • Comply with HS&E guidelines as appropriate

 

To be successful, you will require:
 

  • Tertiary degree with honours in relevant discipline (e.g. Biological Sciences, Immunology or Molecular Biology) with at least 2 years’ work experience
  • Experience in cell culture and aseptic technique
  • Experience in flow cytometry
  • Experience in assay development and validation
  • Experience in immunological techniques
  • Experience with molecular biology and RNA extraction and handling
  • Experience in writing scientific reports
  • Good computer skills. Proficiency in the use of Microsoft Office programs and Flow Cytometry Analysis Programs
  • Ability to work independently as well as within a team environment
  • Excellent communication skills (listening, verbal, written)
  • Knowledge of GLP
