Community Education Counsellor (Identified) - Bundaberg State High School

This position is Temporary Part-Time 0.83FTE (30 Hours Per Fortnight). The salary rate above and in the Role Description reflect 0.83FTE.

Our challenge as a school in a regional centre is to cater for the needs of not only our students but also the needs of our community and we continually strive to improve. Integral to educating the citizens of tomorrow is the high expectations that the school has regarding attendance and behaviour.

As the Community Education Counsellor (Identified) you will:

  • Provide educational counselling and support services within schools to ensure that the best possible assistance services are available to Aboriginal and/or Torres Strait Islander children, students, families and communities.
  • Provide cross cultural awareness training to the broader school community.
  • Build relationships with Indigenous community Elders, parents/carers, students and other community members
  • Engage Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander (ATSI) families in conversations regarding students attendance and wellbeing.
  • Provide information to families about high school relevant to the local context and reinforce commitment to improving achievement, attendance and engagement of ATSI students

The duties will be to:

  • Monitor and maintain student attainment, attendance and engagement of ATSI students
  • Contact parents/carers of students with attendance that is below 95%
  • Contact parents/carers of students who on a regular basis, are not demonstrating or complying with BSHS 4 core values: responsibility, safety, commitment, respectful
  • Meet with students who are referred for uniform concerns and contact parents/carers to discuss concerns
  • Provide student and family support when required including home visits
  • Meet with community Elders to build relations with parents/carers, students and other community members
  • Plan events for parents/carers and Elders to attend to share information about school events and other school business
  • Plan and organise indigenous events including Reconciliation Day and NAIDOC
  • Meet with the HOD - Student Services on a weekly basis

A mandatory requirement of this role is:

  • For this position, it is a genuine occupational requirement that it be filled by an Aboriginal person or a Torres Strait Islander person as set out in Section 7 of the Anti Discrimination Act 1991 for the purposes contained in Section 25 of that Act.

Verification of Aboriginality and/or Torres Strait Island heritage

  • For administrative purposes, in relation to an Aboriginal and/or Torres Strait Islander role, an Aboriginal and/or Torres Strait Islander person is a person who:
    • identifies as an Aboriginal and/or Torres Strait Islander person
    • is of Aboriginal and/or Torres Strait Islander descent
    • is accepted as an Aboriginal and/or Torres Strait Islander person by the Aboriginal and/or Torres Strait Islander community in which he or she lives.
  • Note, that by definition a person who is not an Aboriginal and/or Torres Strait Islander cannot be employed (on any basis) to perform the duties of an Aboriginal and/or Torres Strait Islander identified role.
