Acre Part-Time Farm Assistant

 

acre is about changing the way people think about and consume food through providing warm hospitality in more natural environments.

acre is recruiting a part-time Farm Assistant to operate and oversee its proposed high production roof-top farm at Burwood in Melbourne’s East and be the help evolve the farm-to-table positioning at that location.

This position will be specifically responsible for the day-to-day activities of running a market garden to supply seasonally fresh produce to the acre Brickworks farmhouse eatery and glasshouse café with excess produce to be made available to the local community and possibly Brickworks shopping centre tenants. Additionally, this position will require assistance in community engagement opportunities in the form of farm tours, workshops and special farm-based experiences. You will also be working closely with the acre Cafe and Restaurant Chefs in day to day operations. Additionally, the Farm Assistant will be responsible for maintaining a high level of visual presentation of the farm.

The successful applicant will have qualifications in a relevant field and must have extensive experience in working on a nature-based Market Garden/Farm – demonstrating an ability and understanding to produce a diverse range of seasonal produce that responds to, and meets the needs of, the restaurant/hospitality industry.

KEY ACCOUNTABILITIES

Administration

  • Maintain records of farming activities and crop planning to meet the requirements of the acre restaurant and community engagement programs.

  • Maintain constant communication, report to and be accountable to the acre Farm Manager, collaboratively developing procedures and systems to ensure a sustainable business is maintained.

  • Serve as point of contact for the acre Brickworks farm.


 

Operations

  • Operate the day-to-day activities of the acre Brickworks farm such as harvesting, crop cultivating, fertilising, pest management, packaging and dispatch of produce and maintaining optimal growing conditions.

  • Operate the day-to-day activities based on concepts and techniques from environmentally sustainable farming approaches such as organic farming, biological farming, biodynamics, sustainable agriculture and permaculture.

  • Engage in the activities and production of the glasshouse production space.

  • Maintain the farm/restaurant organic waste recycling systems including worm farming, composting.

  • Run Farm Tours and engage with seasonal farm experience events and workshops.


 

PERSON SPECIFICATION

Mandatory skill set

  1. A solution based/can-do attitude to all situations. Some key philosophies are as follows:

    • Treat all others with respect and dignity.

    • Treat the business (and all business decisions) as if it was yours.

    • Anticipate and/or own the problem & provide a solution – then take note & learn.

    • Know the customer - be at the farm when your customers are there.

    • The role is supported by both the Farm Manager – use these resources and management.

  2. Ability to maintain a high level of customer service within the business.

  3. Strong communication skill set across all levels that enhances collaboration, being involved in a team environment.

 

Essential Criteria

  • Extensive experience in working on nature-based market gardens\farms – eg Organic, Biodynamic, Sustainable Ag. Permaculture

  • Qualifications in relevant field - ie. Organic Farming, Biological Farming, Sustainable Agriculture, Horticulture, Permaculture

  • Demonstrated understanding and experience with organic waste recycling systems and methods.

  • Demonstrated understanding and experience in Garden-to-Plate operations.

  • Demonstrated understanding and experience with hydroponic growing systems

  • High level of communication skills

  • Working knowledge of food sustainability and the garden-to-plate role within it.


 

Desirable Criteria

  • Demonstrated understanding and experience in community engagement.

  • Experience in hospitality.


 

TERMS AND CONDITIONS

Commencement Date: your start date will be negotiated, but potentially 18 November 2019. This position of employment is subject to an initial trial period of 6 months. During this trial period either party can effectively terminate without cause with the provision of two weeks’ notice. However, any entitlements will accrue from your commencement date with the Company.

Hours of Work: The successful candidate will be expected to work a 15-hour week focused around the operational needs of the business.

Wage: (MA000101: Gardening and Landscape Award Services Award part time Level 2) Your wage will be $50,000 inclusive superannuation paid on a pro-rata basis for 15 hours of a standard 38 hours work week. Superannuation will be calculated at the standard rate of 9.5%

Termination without Cause: (TBA)

Cessation of employment: Your employment may be terminated at any time if you:

    • -  Cease to carry on the responsibilities/activities of Farm Assistant.

    • -  Act against the interests of the business.

    • -  Are incapable of completing the tasks allocated by the Farm Manager.

    • -  Disclose to any third party without the consent of the owners of the business any confidential, sensitive, or other information belonging to the owners of the business.

    • -  Are guilty of sexual harassment or discrimination in the workplace
