The role

This role is all about connecting people, excellent story-telling and strategic thinking.

 

The position sits within the City’s Communications and Brand unit which is focused on service excellence both internally and externally. We’re keen to have an industry professional  join our vibrant and passionate team, delivering on the City’s reputation and brand potential through strategic media engagement.

 

The successful appointee will be responsible for:

 

  • developing and maintaining proactive relationships with media organisations, journalists and other relevant stakeholders to facilitate positive, fair and accurate coverage of the City
  • identifying opportunities for proactive media engagement to maximise reputation building and profiling, including coordination of media events to promote the activities of the City
  • developing and managing strategic media and public relations campaigns for showcasing the benefits of the City and the work of its representatives
  • writing, distributing and/or overseeing timely, high-quality content for a range of digital, broadcast and traditional media platforms and outlets
  • providing strategic media advice, guidance and support to internal customers and stakeholders
  • working collaboratively across the organisation to manage crisis communications issues at an operational level
  • conducting monitoring, analysis and reporting on media interest about the City to help identify sensitive or potential issues, and to measure efficacy of active media campaigns
  • providing leadership and coaching to a media team member and collaborating effectively with other members of the Communications and Brand team.

 

Skills and experience

As a collaborative member of the Communications and Brand team, the role is accountable for providing specialist media advice and communications support to key stakeholders including the CEO, Directors and Mayor.  As an experienced professional, the successful appointee will thrive in a busy and dynamic working environment, be adaptable and see the opportunities that come with change. 

 

Applicants must be able to demonstrate through their CV and covering letter that they meet the following capabilities:

 

  • University degree or equivalent relevant experience in an applicable discipline such as Communications, Media Studies or Public Relations.
  • Proven experience in a senior media relations role dealing with media representatives and managing complex or sensitive issues
  • Demonstrated experience in the research, design, delivery and analysis of integrated public relations campaigns
  • Experience handling issues management, crisis communications and corporate reputation for a complex organisation
  • Advanced communication (written, verbal and public speaking) and problem-solving skills
  • Advanced research and analysis skills to report on insights, risks and opportunities for the team, executive, Mayor and other representatives
  • Advanced experience in the efficient utilisation of digital media platforms and technology relevant for the role and the business.
