Expat Engineers

Lurssen is a global leader in designing and building ships of the highest quality for discerning customers worldwide.  For more than 140 years we have earned the experience and expertise required to create vessels that meet virtually any set of individual wishes and different demands.  The Lurssen Group is headquartered in Bremen, which is approximately 1.5 hours drive from Hamburg.

Luerssen Australia is a subsidiary of Lurssen a 4th generation family-owned German company that builds Naval defence vessels and luxury yachts from its nine shipyards across Northern Germany.   Luerssen Australia recently commenced work on the SEA 1180 project as the prime contractor to build 12 Offshore Patrol Vessels (OPVs) for the Royal Australian Navy.

An important goal of this project is the transfer of knowledge and skills from our naval shipbuilding experts in Lurssen in Germany to the local Australian workforce to support the up-skilling and growth of the Australian naval shipbuilding industry for current and upcoming Australian naval projects worth $89billion over 50+ years.  This program of naval shipbuilding is the largest nation-building project in Australian history.

To support this goal and our firm commitment to local Australian industry and the community, Luerssen Australia will employ three local Australian Engineers to be trained and work in our German shipyards for 12 months to learn the Lurssen way of building naval vessels.  At the end of this period these Engineers will return to Perth to continue working in key positions on the SEA1180 project as Subject Matter Experts and to share their Lurssen naval shipbuilding expertise with the local workforce.

These roles are based in our shipyards in the Bremen region of Northern Germany.  An expat package will be offered to the successful individuals.  This package does not extend to anyone accompanying the engineer on the placement.

MINIMUM REQUIREMENTS

  • Tertiary Qualifications in Mechanical Engineering
  • At least 5 years hands-on engineering experience
  • Experience in the Defence, Naval, Shipbuilding Industry (desirable but not essential)
  • Desire to build a long term career with Luerssen Australia based in WA
  • German language skills or willingness to actively learn
  • Motivation and enthusiasm to live in Germany for 12 months
  • Excellent communication and interpersonal skills and a passion for exploring different cultures.
  • Availability to commence work in Germany from mid-2020 for a period of 12 months
  • The ability to gain and maintain a Defence Security Clearance of which a minimum requirement is Australian citizenship
